SARA moving forward in New York

The New York State Board of Regents met Tuesday, February 10, 2015, and approved necessary actions for New York to participate in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA).

Items to be addressed as New York State pursues becoming a member of the initiative: seek legislative approval (permission) for the NYS Board of Regents to commit the state to SARA membership; establish a campus fee structure to provide for operational expenses for the NYS Department of Education (portal agency) to administer institutional SARA participation; and affiliate with the New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE).

The Regents, led by Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch and Vice Chancellor Anthony S. Bottar, are responsible for the general supervision of all educational activities within the State, presiding over The University and the New York State Education Department.

States and U.S. territories that do not currently belong to a regional compact (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, and all U.S. territories except the Pacific Island territories, which belong to WICHE), have two options to join SARA: they can join the compact for their region, and thus receive all of the benefits of interstate collaboration that accrue from such membership; or they can join the compact of their choice solely for the purpose of participation in SARA.

NEW JERSEY - ANY NEWS?

I teach on-line for a number of community colleges, do we have any news on actions pending in New Jersey?

NEW JERSEY

SARA participation discussions are ongoing with stakeholders in New Jersey. New Jersey’s higher education sectors have expressed interest in joining SARA. NEBHE-SARA is working closely with Secretary of Education Rochelle Hendricks and President George Pruitt.

As an educator, we encourage you to reach out/write letters to your legislature or Secretary Hendricks so your voice can be heard on this initiative.

NYS

Does anyone know who we can write to try to get this legislation passed in NYS?

NYS

The best way to have an impact in NYS is to write to the Regent who represents your district (found on the NYS Regents website), Deputy Commissioner of Education John D'Agati, (John.dagati@nysed.gov) and your association director expressing support for SARA. For more information, please contact Sandra Doran, N-SARA Director at sdoran@nebhe.org.
